China Adoption News
Once upon a time adoption process in China it only took 1 or 2 years but since requirements for adoption were changed in May of 2007 it has become a much longer wait. This is due to a few reasons.
What is the wait time?
Basically
there was an increase in applications for adoption from China in the
year 2005 and onwards. There was also a major baby-buying scandal going
on which was discovered, and this also increased the back-log in time to
adopt, and forced China to re-assess its adoption process. The major changes in the way China allows adoption to happen came in 2011 when adopting in China clamped down on adopting to adults who don't have Chinese Ancestry. In-fact those with Chinese Ancestry now have priority. You are more likely to adopt a child with special needs who need extra care now too.
If you are already in the system and have submitted a dossier you will probably have a 5 or 6 year wait.
Before you can even submit a dossier to China it will take you up to seven months to do a home-stay and complete the paperwork required by your local government.
The biggest wait is waiting for China to process your document. They have many dossiers to process and you will spend most of your time waiting for a child to adopt in the queue.
After they have processed it they will give you a referral, and from that point the process speeds right up. Within 6 to 8 weeks you can book your flight to China arrange to collect your adopted child.
Please note, this information is correct at the time of publication in 2011 but of course, adoption laws will change, so all of this could change down the track.
