The best time to get pregnant:
When should you try for a baby?
Did you know that the 'female' sperms usually live longer, but swim slower, and the 'male' sperm usually swim quicker but also die quicker?
Ovulation usually happens around the middle of your cycle. Day one of your cycle begins the first day of your period, with the end of your cycle being the day you get your period again. So if you have a 28 day cycle, you might ovulate around day 14.
If you are to have intercourse, or seek help from an assisted form of fertility treatment, it makes sense to find out when you ovulate so that you can maximize your chances of pregnancy and indeed try to get pregnant around your most fertile time. So how do you know when the best time to get pregnant is?
Find out when you ovulate
The long story short is that the best time to get pregnant is just before and leading up to ovulation.
The following are ways for you to discover when you are ovulating, because everyone is different.
Basal Body Thermometer (BBT)
A BBT is the best way to see when your body has a thermal shift.Your temperature usually slightly elevates immediately after ovulation because of the hormone progesterone, and stays elevated for the second half of your cycle, dropping when you get your periods again.
If you can find when the thermal shift takes place, you will know when you've ovulated and therefore if you've timed intercourse correctly for optimum chances of conception.
Checking your Cervical Mucus
Your cervical mucus is your bodies natural way of telling you when you are most fertile for conception. If you have good fertile mucus, the sperm will be assisted to swim easier and gain access to your fallopian tubes alot easier.
You normally have egg white cervical mucus around ovulation, which is the best mucus to get to conceive.
Checking your Cervix
You can check your cervix which will indicate to you when it is open and soft so that sperm can penetrate through and reach your fallopian tubes. When you aren't fertile your cervix will sit low and be hard and closed, making it impossible for sperm to gain entry to your fallopian tubes.
Using an ovulation calculator
An ovulation calculator is based on numbers, so although it may not be 100% correct it can give you a good estimate of when you should ovulate.Using an ovulation predictor kit (opk)
An ovulation predictor kit is a great way to find out when you are likely to ovulate. There are two types of kits, one is where you can urinate on a stick that acts similar to a pregnancy test by showing two lines when your body has all the right hormones taking place for ovulation.
The other way is through saliva that reads your ferning pattern to again see if there is a change that will indicate ovulation is pending.
In a nutshell, the best time to get pregnant is just before and leading up to the day of ovulation.
You basically have about a 5 day window of when you are most fertile each cycle.
If you can take advantage of trying to conceive in this window, your chances of conception will greatly increase.
