Freezing Sperm

Freezing Sperm

Freezing sperm is a technology that has been a saviour to many people. There are plenty of reasons you may wish to have sperm frozen.

Why Would You Want To Freeze Sperm?

baby-boy-or-girl
A recent and more extreme example that happened locally is a lady whose fiance was killed in a motorbike accident. They had a date in place for marriage and were keen to start a family very quickly. The day he died she got authority to have his sperm taken out, so that she could still have his baby. This is an extreme case, but never-the-less a validated reason.
If not for this technique it would be impossible for this lady to try and conceive a baby from the partner she was willing to commit to for life.
This procedure is also great for couples where the male has difficulty ejaculating, or is physically not available to produce a sperm specimen readily.
An example of this could be a couple where the partner works overseas for six months at a time. Try having a baby the old fashioned way in that situation! It won't happen!!

It's comforting to know that prolonged storage or sperm, or embryos (sperm and egg together), has shown no detrimental effect on the rate of survival, or even their chances of implantation into the egg.
Other great news is that children often born as a result of sperm being frozen and than transfered into an egg do not have any higher rate of birth defects than that of a naturally conceived child.

Other men who may need this procedure, or find it beneficial are those who have gotten a vasectomy reversal. I actually have a friend whose partner had this done, they decided they weren't going to have any more children after the first two. However, because we are human we all change our minds!! And so they have!!
Other men who may wish to preserve their sperm for later use are men who have to undergo cancer treatment, or chemo and radiation treatment. Men who are undergoing any kind of prostate or testicular surgery should also think about freezing their sperm.
Some forms of cancer treatment can actually leave men sterile, so you don't want to mess around with that. Get yourself sorted and talk to a doctor now, so you have a firm option for having children in place, in the event it does render infertile after treatment.

Freezing sperm is a good option for men who have low sperm counts, ejaculatory dysfunction and high risk occupations and particularly face lots of chemicals everyday.
Alternatively, some people become sperm donors and have their sperm frozen to offer to couples who have no option other than to use someone's elses sperm to conceive.

Freezing Sperm:
How Is It Done?

The male usually ejaculates and if he can't it can be collected via a syringe style procedure that can be done with light anaethetic.
Usually the sperm is frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196c or -321f.
It is than kept and stored until needed.
This procedure isn't very expensive either, in comparison to alot of other procedures.
