Positive Pregnancy Test! Did you just get a bfp?

Positive Pregnancy Test!
Did you just get a bfp?

Finding out if you have a positive pregnancy test can be one of the longest and most nerve wracking moments of your life. For a lot of women, especially those who have been trying to get pregnant for a very long time, it can feel almost like a dream, or very surreal! Finding out you are pregnant is indeed an exciting time for a lot of women. Of course, for some it may come as a shock and maybe something that wasn't planned or intended, but either way, if you are pregnant there are some things you will need to do now.

Make sure you know how to use a pregnancy test correctly. Find out here if you are doing it right:

How do you know for sure that you are pregnant?

There's always been tests that don't show a correct result... Well, if in doubt take a second test, but if you really want to confirm your pregnancy is happening, book an appointment with your local health practitioner. Usually a blood test from them will help confirm things for you.
If you have followed the instructions carefully on your pregnancy test, and it's still showing as a positive pregnancy test, about 97% of the time the test is correct. So if it's saying you are pregnant, chances are, that you are!
You could be looking at a false result if you check the test after its expiry. For example, a lot of tests will say wait 5 minutes and check. If you check in 20 minutes, the result you are seeing may not be representative of what is really happening.
Also, there are some fertility drugs or medication that can artificially raise the level of hCG in your body, and if this happens you may see a false positive result, this is because most pregnancy tests measure the level of hCG in your body, and if you have more of it from a medication, it may be reading that.

Testing in the morning when you awaken is usually the best time, so if you are still in doubt wait until the next day (if you can!) and test again.

The problem with seeing a positive pregnancy test very early (say before even your period is due) is that most miscarriages happen at this stage of pregnancy, so be careful at this time.
It may not be a good idea to post your news all over Facebook for example! Usually most pregnancies that make it to 12 weeks are safe after that.
If you can't face seeing an early miscarriage, it may be a good idea to always wait to test AFTER your period is normally due.
