Possible Causes of Unexplained Infertility

Possible Causes of Unexplained Infertility

What are the causes of unexplained infertility?
Well firstly, you must remember that people defined as having unexplained infertility are in this category until a reason for infertility can be found.
Hopefully with continual testing for further things - you may eventually discover why you are having trouble, and be able to do something about it by knowing what your causes for infertility are!

If you are having trouble conceiving or if you have been told you have unexplained infertility, you may wish to explore the following, any of them could be reasons why you are having difficulty conceiving:

Abnormally Shaped Fallopian Tubes

One of the main causes of unexplained infertility are fallopiah tubes.
Your fallopian tubes might be clear of blockages or free from damage, but if they aren't shaped to help easily sweep the egg along the tube channel, or if the little hairs inside the tubes (called cilia) aren't right to direct the egg into the uterus, then there may be problems with your egg: (a) being fertilised and (b) reaching the destination where it needs to settle in the uterus.

Abnormal Eggs

In every woman, even those who fall pregnant easily, there are going to be abnormal eggs, but normally the good eggs outweigh the bad.
For some women having trouble getting pregnant, poor egg quality can be one of the causes of unexplained infertility.
The problem is, if most of your eggs aren't the proper shape and size they need to be, or if they don't contain the right chromosomes for successful fertilisation and implantation then your fertility will be highly compromised.

Infections

You may have problems conceiving if you get an infection, especially a vaginal infection or one from a sexually transmitted disease. This is one of the other main causes of unexplained infertility.
Infections can cause problems with fertilisation, and implantation of the egg in the uterus. The problem is that some infections may be undetectable from a normal laboratory test because the particles of the infection exist in such small numbers - however, it will be enough to wreak havoc with your ability to conceive.

Luteinised Unruptured Follicle Syndrome

Your eggs can end up trapped inside the very sacs that initially protect them. During ovulation the egg should break free of this sac and then move through the fallopian tube with the leftover membrane from the sac becoming the corpus luteum. If the egg fails to break free of the sac, ovulation may never happen.

Psychological And Stress Factors

Sadly, you would be surprised by the saying 'mind over matter'. It's really true! Your brain actually controls your reproductive system! There has been evidence in some women who suffer depression that they have more problems conceiving then those who don't.
It's hard to control your stress, but knowing it is one of the causes of unexplained infertility might just help you to reign in that stress a little more!
Try to find ways to manage your stress levels. Perhaps take up a hobby you enjoy, or participate in a sport. Exercise lifts endorphin levels and it's harder to feel sad when endorphins are running through your body!

Abnormal Luteal Phase

The luteal phase happens in the second half of the cycle after you have ovulated. It's a very important part of your cycle in being able to fall pregnant.
This is when the corpus luteum produces progesterone. This hormone is responsible for making sure your endometrial lining is primed and friendly for implantation.
Without it, your uterus is a hostile place to any egg trying to find a home to grow. Your progesterone levels may not elevate quickly enough, or perhaps it elevates too quickly but then goes as quickly as it comes.
The body is very intricate, so either way the levels must be right.

Immune Problems

Just like some women have the unfortunate problem of being allergic to semen, some women can have an overzealous immune system that confuses the eggs with being a foreign substance that it attacks and tries to kill. Your body mistakenly thinks it is doing the right thing protecting you from something that shouldn't be there.
See, the purpose of your immune system is to fight off and ward of invading cells and organisms that may threaten a healthy body causing disease or infection. The same goes for men, their bodies immune system may do the same to his sperm cells. All of this will impede your fertility.

Weak Sperm

Sperm must be able to penetrate the egg to fertilise it. If it doesn't have the energy after its long swim to the fallopian tubes or uterus, it may not be able to break through the egg to create the embryo - which starts the process of growing a baby in your uterus. Even healthy sperm struggle to break through the egg and can't do it, so the quality of spermatozoids is critical when attempting to try and conceive.
