Thyroid symptoms are something we often don't look for, but did you know that thyroid disorders are the second most common endocrinologic disorders found in pregnancy?
When you are having trouble becoming pregnant, you may think of a million different things to check for, but often women don't think about checking their thyroid.
Thyroid disease is very common in women of child-bearing years and can cause complications during pregnancy, dependent upon the severity of it. It can affect mother and baby.
There are two main types of thyroid problems , they are hyperthyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Graves disease accounts for more than 85% of all cases of hyperthyroid problems, whereas Hashimoto thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism.
Auto-immune thyroid dysfunctions remain a common cause of both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism in pregnant women.

Your thyroid can cause hormonal changes throughout your entire body. You would be surprised how much your thyroid has to do with the normal functioning of your body.

Without normal thyroid function you can have problems like:

- an irregular menstrual cycle, along with other menstruation problems that could affect your fertility. (usually when your thyroid is under-active (hypothroidism)

- ovulation problems - you may not ovulate each month, therefore there is no egg release blocking any chance of potential fertilization for conception each month. Both an overactive (hyperthyroidism) and under-active (hypothyroidism) thyroid can cause this problem.

- cysts can form on your ovaries.

- risk of miscarriage increases

- your risk also increases for having a baby with developmental problems or lower IQ

What Can Cause A Thyroid Problem?

If you take estrogen or birth control pills containing estrogen it can cause some problems in changing the level of thyroid hormone your body needs.
Also if you have hypothyroidism before you are pregnant you may need to discuss with your doctor adjusting your medication during pregnancy, because typically your estrogen levels in your blood will become higher when you are pregnant.
