Concerned about
pregnancy after 35?
Unfortunately for women, as they get older, their fertility declines.
Do you know you are actually at the peak of your fertility at about age 27? And from there it gradually declines, taking a swift dive around the age of 40.
Of course, all of this is general information and every individual is different. You might have great fertility levels at 45, better than a 27 year old who has poor fertility.
So what can you do if you are trying to get pregnant and not having much luck?
Well there are a number of options, firstly you need to make sure if you have tried all of the following on our Top Tips To Conceive page. It's worth a look, and there's got to be something there that could work for you!Secondly, if you have been trying for a while, say 6 months (because you are 35 or older), you should visit your doctor and have some fertility tests conducted. In the event there are some problems there, you may need to take a look at assisted fertility treatment.
But why does age matter with women, why would you typically have more trouble with pregnancy after 35, than say if you were 20?
Well there are a few reasons, and you should know that mens fertility can stay reasonably intact as they get older, because unlike women who are born with all of their eggs and lose them over time each month when they have a period, a man can reproduce and regenerate sperm every three months.
This means, if he has a bad lifestyle that is hindering his fertility, he can make changes and actually improve his sperm.
For a woman though your ovarian reserve will dwindle with time.
There are advantages to getting pregnant when you are older too!
Here's a great little video talking about the advantages or disadvantages of pregnancy as you get older, particularly after thirty-five:
