Egg Donation:
How Can It Help You Get Pregnant?
Egg donation usually occurs when you are unable to conceive a baby using your own egg. Most people already have chosen a friend or family member to be their donor.
Donors are usually and ideally between the age of 21 and 38, and usually women who have already given birth and wish to help somebody else achieve pregnancy.
For donation to occur tests that check genetics, physical factors, social and medical history (in which they should advise of any known allergies) will be carried out before acceptance.
A lot of things need to be checked to make sure the egg is of good quality and won't be detrimental to the baby or mother who will carry the donors' egg.
Some of the screenings will likely include:
- blood group test
- hepatitis B
- hepatitis C
- cystic fibrosis
- syphilis
- chlamydia
- chromosome analysis
- HIV
Will you have a good chance of achieving pregnancy? Believe it or not, a lot of it comes down to the age of the donor and the number and quality of their donated eggs!
You will be given oestrogen and progesterone to prepare you lining of the uterus for a potential pregnancy. In the meantime the males semen is collected and used in a laboratory to fertilize the donor egg, which is then transferred to you.
What If You Are The Donor?
If you are the donor you will receive a medical check, and if
you get the okay you will be given medication to stimulate the ovaries
to produce a optimum number of eggs after blood testing and ultrasounds
to confirm when the eggs are ready for collection, which is done under
general anesthetic.
What are your options if egg donor-ship doesn't work?
There are still some wonderful options that may be available to you so that you can achieve your dream to raise a family.
Check out this page about the adoption process and how to adopt a baby. Or if you aren't too sure about adoption and can't carry a baby yourself, there's always the option of surrogacy (providing it is legal in your country to do).
You may be able to even use your egg and your partner's sperm. Or you could use your partners sperm and someone else's egg or visa-verso.
It's one way you may be able to have a baby that is genetically still yours, but carried by someone else. Or in the event you can't use your egg or your partners sperm, it is a beautiful way for you to be able to have a baby to raise from birth.
Check out the types of surrogacy here, and see how the whole surrogacy process works.
