Embryo Donation:
You Can Still Get Pregnant!
If you have egg or sperm problems, embryo donation could be the perfect solution!
In the past couples who didn't have quality eggs and sperm were basically out of options to conceive a child of their own, but thanks to technology, today there are fertility treatments like this that can make your dream come true.
Couples donate their eggs and sperm which are then used to create an embryo in a laboratory, frozen and stored for an intended recipient couple who have known sperm and egg problems.
Unlike egg donation, where your partner might have quality sperm to match with someone elses egg, this is the solution for couples that both have problems.
Usually the couple who is donating can decide if they would like to donate their egg and sperm to the chosen couple.
The donors are usually couples who have had successful IVF and have leftover embryos and wish to help other couples.
They can decide who they would like to help which is usually done through the exchange of information that doesn't actually identify the couple needing the egg and sperm, but allows the donors to see information such as the interests and occupations of the recipients.
Also information such as hair and eye colour is revealed to try and match as closely to the parents as possible.
What If You Want to Be A Recipient?
You may not be able to have eggs any more of premature menopause, inherited conditions, or perhaps you've had treatment for cancer. Even surgery can result in you not having eggs for conception anymore.
You could be in your forties and your egg reserve has dwindled, yet you wish to have a baby.
The other factor is if you are continually miscarriaging, you could have a genetic disorder, using someone elses egg that doesn't carry the same gene could rectify that problem for you.
All egg donors are screened for infectious diseases and genetic conditions before being able to successfully become a donor. Also, age does matter when it comes to the quality of an egg, so preferably couples under the age of 36 are desired.
If you are a successful recipient and manage to conceive and go on to have a baby, congratulations, you will be the legal parents. Usually people waiting on embryo donation are on a list that can take up to 5 years, so it can be a difficult and drawn-out journey, but there are ways you can speed up the process by advertising for a donor, seeking out a willing friend or family member who might help you along quicker.
