Ovulation Predictor Kit (OPK)

Ovulation Predictor Kit (OPK)

An ovulation predictor kit establishes when you are going to ovulate.
The few days before you ovulate and the day of ovulation are the best chances you have of falling pregnant each month. That's why if you are trying to conceive, having an OPK on hand will really make the job easier!

An ovulation predictor kit, or OPK, is a great way to establish your most fertile time of the month, and therefore aid you in being able to become pregnant quicker.
Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. The egg travels into your fallopian tubes where it waits to hopefully be fertilised. It does this by sending a chemical 'beacon' out to any sperm that made it to the tubes, encouraging them to swim towards it.
In order for pregnancy to occur, the egg must be fertilised by the sperm within 24 hours after its release.

Immediately prior to ovulation, the body produces a large amount of luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers the release of a ripened egg from the ovary. This "LH surge" usually takes place in the middle of the menstrual cycle.

It is the LH surge that the ovulation predictor kit will monitor to predict impending ovulation.
This is because once you get the LH surge, it is what triggers the release of and egg from one of your ovaries.
Most women will ovulate within 24-36 hours after the LH surge is detected.
It is important to know when you are about to ovulate if you are trying to fall pregnant, that's because the egg can only be fertilized at a maximum of 6-24 hours after ovulation.
